YACHTING
Yachting
in Guyana is a safe haven for cruisers way afar.
Guyana’s
Essequibo River is the largest between Brazil Amazon and Venezuela‘s
Oronoco Rivers. Its expansive waters provide a truly magnificent
cruising destination and Guyana, location outside of the hurricane belt,
is proven to be a save haven for the Caribbean cruisers to hang out
during and after the hurricane season.
The
waters surrounding the small mining town of Bartica provide some of the
most exciting, virtually untouched, and beautiful river anchorages
anywhere in the world.
The
Town of Bartica is now an official Port- Of- Entry and cruisers making
the Essequibo River their destination can sail the 30miles up river from
the ocean to Bartica to clear customs and immigration with a simplified
2 –page form. Clearance takes less than an hour.
Note:
The best time this year 2011 to visit Bartica is for
(A):
The Annual Bartica Easter Regatta April 24 & 25.
(B):
Our Bartica Summer Regatta July24.
(C):
Our First Yacht Show on July 30 at Bartica Golden Beach which will be
held by Falls View Tours.

UPDATES TO CRUISING GUIDE TO GUYANA
We are cruising in Guyana using the Chris
Doyle Trinidad and Tobago + Barbados and Guyana Guide, Third Edition
2006. The guide has proved invaluable. I have noted below
some minor errors and updates in the Guyana section that might assist
other readers:
Page 210 - Regulations
Customs charge G$2500 to clear-in and the same to clear-out.
No Immigration charge.
There is an ATM at Scotiabank, Second Avenue.
Page 216 - Local Etiquette
In Bartica, at least, few local women wear long sleeves.
Waypoints - Naming
Some waypoints are named differently in the table and chartlets; the
letters in brackets are inserted or missing:
GUE(S)01
GUE(S)02
GUE(S)03
GU(Y)K01
GU(Y)K02
GU(Y)K03
GU(Y)K04
GU(Y)K05
Page 234 - Waypoints to Kit and Gems place (previously reported)
GU(Y)K01 should read 06º 29.145'N not 06º 27.145'N.
GU(Y)K02 should read 058º 35.920'W not 058º 36.730'W.
The white can mark off Hurakabra is missing.
Page 236 - Chartlet of Bartica and Confluence...
Waypoints GUYS20 and GUYS21 are plotted in the wrong positions on the
chartlet. A waypoint is indeed needed where GUYS20 is incorrectly
shown, to clear the 3' drying patch. This applies to GUYS20 on
page 238 chartlet also.
Page 237 - Baganara
GUYS23 should have longitude 058º 35.700'W.
Page 240 - Restuarants
Chip Chip is in Second Avenue, not Sixth Avenue.
waypoint corrections from
DOMINOcatamaran:
We were plotting the waypoints on our Maxsea and noticed a couple of
points might have been misprints. Here are JP's comments:
GUK01 - Should be 06:29.145 instead of 06:23.145
GUK02 - Should be 058:35.93 instead of 058:36.730
www.dominocatamaran.blogspot.com
I have checked these out they seem correct the ones in the book are
definitely wrong! They seem to be correct on the charts so it looks
like a transcription error.
Thanks Kit Nascimento for the following
corrections and updates.
-
Full Customs, Immigration and Health
service facilities are now in place at Bartica for clearing
yachts and a simple one page form is now in use. Cruisers should
proceed up river and anchor off Bartica and contact the Customs
office at Bartica on (592) 664-3465 or 684-4054 or call
the Commissioner of Customs (ag) on (592) 225-4698 or contact
Kit Nascimento on (592) 226-0240; 225-3557 (H&O); 640-4497(M),
email kitnasc@gol.net.gy
. Customs and Immigration will come on board by boat to effect
clearance.
Kit Nascimento recently sent me some
writings by Rory & Wendy on the yacht Zingara. I feel some
of these gives information not in the guide so I add them here. Thank
you Rory and Wendy and I hope posting this is OK, if not get in touch!
Navigation up the
Essequibo River to Bartica, using the Doyle waypoints, is relatively
simple for yachts drawing less than 15 feet. Cruisers should keep a look
out for small outboard power boats,
water taxis, fishing nets and floating debris. Cruisers must, however,
take notice of 10- foot and more tidal variations and a somewhat
shifting sandbar of about 10-foot in depth at the mouth. Entering on a
rising tide and for sailing upriver is therefore recommended.
The river floods at 1.8 knots, roughly, and ebbs at about 3.5
knots. Muddy at the mouth, the river waters gradually turn a golden
brown coloured by vegetation. The banks display magnificent white sand
beaches
The Baganara and
Hurakabra Resorts, in particular, now cater to receive cruisers anchored
close off-shore. These Resorts are exceptionally beautiful nature
destinations which offer exceedingly comfortable and well appointed
accommodation, jungle walks, birding, beach front dining, well stocked
bars, recreation facilities, water sports and dingy docking.
Cruisers can make
arrangements with the resorts for support services such as fuel,
laundry, ice, potable water, groceries, garbage disposal and fast boat
transport to Bartica and river and road transportation to the capital
city of Georgetown. Baganara has a small, light aircraft landing strip
and Hurakabra, similarly, at a close by Island.
Names
to look out for in Bartica are:-
Lashley's Boat Park - located between Cool Breeze Bar and
the Dock, where your tender can be left safely and also supplies
lovely Chicken.
Bhagwandas of "D" Factor Interior Guest House -
who does some 'Not to be Missed' guided tours of the Rivers and
Waterfalls and is also a great local contact, he arranged for our UK Gas
Bottles to be refilled amongst other things. Telephone (592) 455
2544
Freddie's Meat Market - supplies the best fillet steak you will ever
taste, and an opportunity to catch up on the latest soap opera.
Waypoint
Problem Kit's place - We have received the following:
I am sure I will return soon. Everything was great. I enjoyed my stay
very
much.
A tiny thing: The waypoints to your resort are wrong. And -
unfortunately - the position of the rock right in front of your
pasarella. I know the right one, because I hit the rock. I will give the
correct data to Chris and to you too. If someone is asking in the
future.
I enjoyed your resort and Your wonderful house. It must be great
to spend some weeks there.
