As
you approach La Desirade it is etched starkly on the horizon - a 700
foot slab of rock rising from the ocean - five miles long by one and
half wide, and much of that width is the mountain top plateau. The
northern side is steep and inhospitable, the southern side has the only
easily habitable land and this is protected for much of the way by a
fringing reef.
This
quiet and beautiful island is off the beaten track. You can rent cars,
scooters or bikes and explore all the roads including the one that goes
right along the mountain ridge. Up there, side walks down little trails
will bring you to spectacular views. Swimming and beaching is excellent
on several locations behind the barrier reef.
The
island provides all the electricity it needs from about 50 giant
windmills that are perched on the mountain top. They sell a considerable
surplus to Guadeloupe.

You
can visit by ferry from St. Francois in Guadeloupe or take your yacht in
if you draft is less than 5.5 feet.
