Roseau
is the capital of Dominica and the main town. Of all the islands, this
city has the most wonderful assortment of authentic and very lovely
Caribbean buildings, along with an increasing number of new blocks. Many
older buildings feature balconies and overhangs and intricate
gingerbread trim. If you peek into gateways, you'll see interesting
courtyards. Much of Roseau is being renovated and some of the
refurbished older buildings are gorgeous. A few of the older simpler
wooden buildings are untouched and beautiful, just because of their
weathered and aged appearance. Roseau is the only city in the Eastern
Caribbean I know of in which many of the houses have cellars. These
practical rooms allowed for cool storage and provided a place to shelter
in a hurricane. At the Sutton Place Hotel one has been converted to a
cozy bar called Cellars Bar.
The
waterfront of the town has had a face-lift and is now a wide street,
with a long walkway. A cruise ship dock stands at one end, a ferry
terminal in the middle, and a fishing port towards the river. Roseau is
the best place from which to explore the southern national park and
surrounding attractions. It also has the best collection of shops and
restaurants.

The
main yacht anchorage is between Green Flash Bar in the south and Sea
World in the north. In addition, Fort Young has 4 moorings, you are
welcome to pick one up. Just to the south Dominica Marine Center has
many moorings, as well as a fuel and water dock. Two boat vendors have put out a variety of
moorings close to Anchorage Hotel, snorkel on the moorings to make sure
they look good.
On a mooring you do of course swing free to the wind and
swells, and although anchoring and going stern to the shore is more
bother, it is more comfortable, as you stay bow to any swells.
Both
the Anchorage hotel and Fort Young offer good docks where you can leave
your dinghy when you want to explore ashore. Anchorage also has fuel and
water for sale and you can come alongside for that.

Sea
Cat and Pancho are boat helpers who patrol the area and work hard to aid
boats in a variety of ways. They hope that you will also take tours with
them. They offer moorings for rent and will help you tie up. They can
also arrange for laundry to be done, and they will shop for you if you
wish. Sea Cat is an excellent taxi driver and
hiking companion. Sea Cat has a house on the waterfront and a
dinghy dock where you can bring your yacht alongside for water. Pancho keeps three taxi drivers busy, Jones, Corneal
and Lloyd, who all come from Scott's Head. He tends to use the Anchorage
dock.
